Since middle school, I’ve been the unofficial “home engineer”. I started by making small things, such as assembling shoe cabinets, lamps, and planter stands when I was around 12. This spring break, my project took it a step further: building a medium-sized metal cabinet for the kitchen.

At first, the pile of metal sheets and screws looked a bit daunting, but I actually enjoy figuring things out like a puzzle. I’ve loved building things ever since I was a kid playing with LEGO sets that had hundreds of pieces. A few hours (and a couple of wrong turns) later, the cabinet stood proudly in the corner of our kitchen,  sturdy and shiny. Now, every time I see my parents using it, I feel a proud and satisfying sense of accomplishment, because I've built something useful with my own hands.
